read this if you’re a brand photographer

If you're a brand photographer, listen up.

It's time to bid farewell to tightly cropped shots.

When shooting images that will be used digitally, they need to be flexible as you don’t know how they will be used (and neither do I until I sit down and see what other content I have to work with). Simply providing your client with a mix of portrait and landscape images won’t cut it if you haven’t shot them wide enough.

This blog post will explore why shooting wide is what your client doesn’t know they need (unless they’re my client 😉).

Responsive Web Design

Responsive web design has become the gold standard for crafting websites that adapt to different screen sizes and orientations. By providing wide images, photographers offer web designers the flexibility to create visually appealing layouts that accommodate various devices, including desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones.

It’s better to capture more background initially, as we can’t add more later.

You’d be surprised at how quickly images can look disproportionate as we move from a 13” laptop to a desktop.

Wide images can seamlessly adjust their proportions, ensuring optimal viewing experiences across screens of all sizes without heads or limbs being cut off.

Further, no client wants to see their head look gigantic on a desktop screen! It’s in-your-face confronting and avoided at all costs.

A Better User Experience

The flexibility afforded by widely cropped imagery allows the web designer to provide a pleasant user experience optimised for conversion.

Wide images can be resized intentionally for their purpose and strategically placed alongside other elements, such as text, icons, and navigation menus, without compromising the overall layout or distracting the users from the intended message.

Conclusion

By providing wider images for their clients’ websites, photographers enable web designers to create visually appealing layouts that adapt seamlessly to different screen sizes.

Ultimately, by embracing wide photography, photographers support their clients in maximising the use of their images and seeing a higher return on their photography investment. This positive experience increases the likelihood of your client becoming a repeat client (and increases referrals from web designers!).
